Wood fences have been a very common type of fencing for decades. The most widely used materials in our area are pine and cedar.   For a long-lasting fence, using a pressure-treated wood is best.  Any non-pressure-treated materials should be stained prior to finishing.

Wood typically costs less than other fencing materials, but it does require more maintenance.  To get the longest life possible out of your fence, it should be rinsed off a couple times per year, and it should repainted or stained every three or four years.  Cedar fencing may be left to weather, but a clear sealer should be applied every few years.

What type of wood fence should I build?

There are a couple of  factors that you should take in to consideration when choosing the right wood fencing material for you.

  • Pricing – Pine is much less expensive than cedar, but has a shorter life expectancy.
  • Pests – A cedar fence is more pest resistant than pine.
